L2 cache

Post by mandm6 »

Sorry for all the questions folks but i guess i'm just computer dumb. My question.
If you add more memory to your computer, Does that stop your L2 Cache? I added another Gig of ram to my computer and it shows on a test that my L2 Cache was O KB. I'm running a P4 3.4 Ghz with 550 HT and 800 FSB. I had 2 gigs of ram and moved it up to 3 GB of ram. It says it will take 4 but i'm stopping at 3. Now its configed with a 512 module in A bank 0 and a 512 in B bank 3 and a 1 gig in A bank 1 and a 1 gig in B bank 2. They told me to put the pc3200 chips in the same colored slots. Banks A and B both have black and blue slots so it ended up with the 512's in the blue slots and the 1 gig's in the black slots. It came with 2 512's and i put 1 gig in it a while back. The reason i did not put 4 x 1gig is because hp said 32 bit processors will not run the 4gigs of ram even though it says its expandable to 4 gigs of ram so i used the 512's that came in it.
Also now when i click om my computer, It shows 2 3.4 processors and under it, It says 3.0 GHZ OF RAM. Any idea why it shows 2 processors? It shows 2 in the Device Manager also.
This is a different computer than the other one i posted about. This is my main computer and i have changed NOTHING in the settings. I just added more Ram.. Seems like i always have problems that nobody else has run in to.. :(
Thanks, Kevin

Adding ram doesnt affect CPU cache.

It shows 2 most likely because its an HT(HyperThreading) P4 and absically recycles its wasted cpu time into a virtual 2nd processor.

Thanks YoS, That makes a little sense to me because thats close to what they said would happen if 4 gigs were put in even though its suppose to hold 4 gigs. They said it would be wasted memory.. Is there a way to check the L2 cache on the machine.

Name Manufacturer L2 Cache Ext Clock Load

Interesting program, not overly useful for hardware stats, very useful for software stats and runtime usage.

Yes it's a nice little program to look at different SS and RU. I had a friend get me to dl it and take a look. I'm a sucker for dl little programs like that. Maybe to much of one because i have dl a lot of junk also but once in a while i come across a program i like to keep even if i do not know what half the stuff means. I just know when some intrest me.
