Hi to all
We Canadians will be glued to the TV for the next couple of weeks as the fight for the Holy Grail of Hockey ensues.

Beer sales will be Up & Sex will be Down and the Bookies will be grinning ear to ear as bets are made.

Come on America join in the fun.

The Stanley Cup Finals will open Monday, June 5th.

The Eastern Conference Champions The Carolina Hurricanes will have home-ice advantage in the Stanley Cup Final and will host Games 1, 2 and, if necessary, Games 5 and 7.

Edmonton will host Games 3, 4 and, if necessary, Game 6.

The start time for all Stanley Cup Final games will be 8 p.m., ET.

OLN will telecast Games 1 and 2 in the U.S., while NBC will broadcast Games 3 through 7.

In Canada, CBC and RDS will provide coverage for the entire series.

If you can get the CBC Network that's the place to be for the best coverage available imho.

Pulling strongly for Edmonton.

They've had so much time off that I worry about them being rusty and going down 2-0 in the series. If they can manage a split on the road, I like their chances.

RALEIGH -- As far as commissioner Gary Bettman is concerned, all is rosy in the National Hockey League's world.

It doesn't matter that television ratings have been non-existent in the United States.

It doesn't matter that the Stanley Cup final pits the smallest market in the league against the second-smallest market in the United States.

It doesn't matter that the new general manager of the Boston Bruins, Peter Chiarelli, is employed by the divisional rival Ottawa Senators and will continue to maintain that status until at least July 15.

"Things are good," said Bettman. "Our vital signs are strong and I have tremendous optimism about the future of our game."

Bettman defended the league's U.S. cable-TV deal with the Outdoor Life Network, saying that, "We are delighted with the treatment we are receiving from OLN."

The league left ESPN with its greater exposure -- and more importantly, its much greater institutional exposure in hotels and bars -- to go to OLN, a decision Bettman says was a wise one.

"On the cable side," he said, "we gave up some distribution, in order to get better coverage."

Bettman did concede, however, that, "institutional coverage is something we have identified as a priority."

Starting with Saturday's Game 3 of the Stanley Cup final, all games will be shown on NBC and there have been projections that because of a lack of American interest in the game, and the presence of uninspiring markets, the ratings will be the lowest in the history of American network television.

But Bettman says that the sale of advertising has gone well and added, "I don't think that people decide to tune in or not depending on the population of the markets that are playing."

As for the Chiarelli situation, Bettman said that conflict-of- interest situations are dangerous when they're not exposed. Since the two teams worked out the arrangement, he said, it is acceptable.

On other matters, Bettman said that the highly unbalanced schedule, with teams playing divisional rivals eight times, will be back for next season.

He said that the determination regarding the future home of the Pittsburgh Penguins -- which may be Pittsburgh -- will be made in November.

And he said he has no problem with the rule calling for an automatic minor penalty when a player clears the puck over the glass in the defensive zone. But he also pointed out that decisions regarding such matters are made by the competition committee.

Their Goaltender Dwayne Roloson is Out for the Series from the knee injury suffered last night.

This certainly will affect the outcome of this Series imho. A real shame.

Yes a major setback for the Oil, however its that time of year when you have a chance to step up to the plate and be a Zero or a Hero.

This is where legends are made. The World is watching you and you either do it, or not. Great place to be for an up and comer.

Tomorrow night should tell the story. It will be interesting sure.

Strange things happen at this time of year and though i no longer have that gut feeling that the Oil will take it all, i'm not counting them out yet either.

Tomorrow is key. We should know then whats happening. 1 Game and 1 injury as important as it seems never tells the full story imho.

I'll be watching to see what transpires. Adversity can be a real stimulant in times like these.

What a sad excuse for a Game this was by the Oilers. They should be totally embarrassed by their selfish play. Penalty after penalty, all needless.

Add to that their unwillingness to Shoot when the opportunities presented themselves and you have a recipe for disaster.

What most feared never materialized as their Goaltending was in no way at fault.

The Oilers are through and simply did themselves in with undisciplined play. I expected more from them than this.

would take some superior coaching by Mctavish - and honestly i dont think he has it in him as he never knew when to wear a helmut as a player. There comes a time when YOU gotta PLay HARD!

UNIONDALE, N.Y. -- The New York Islanders are poised to make a big splash by hiring prominent NHL exiles Neil Smith and Ted Nolan, a league source told The Canadian Press last night.

The Islanders have called a news conference for today to name Smith their new general manager and Nolan their new head coach.

Both have had extended leaves from the NHL.

Smith served as GM of the New York Rangers from 1989 to 2000 and was the architect of the 1994 Stanley Cup winning team. More recently, he's been doing TV work.

Nolan was last seen in the NHL in '97, coaching the Buffalo Sabres. He won the Jack Adams Award as coach of the year that season but was not brought back after turning down a one-year deal from incoming GM Darcy Regier.

Nolan, a 48-year-old Ojibwa, led the Moncton Wildcats of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League this past season and recently suggested that he didn't have an NHL job because of his race.

The hirings are a bold move for a franchise that hasn't won a playoff round since '93.

Longtime GM Mike Milbury announced in January that he would step down from the position after helping find a replacement. He is now a vice-president on the team's business side.

"I think that whoever comes in here is going to have to work with me to try to build a business that has been bleeding (owner) Charles (Wang) out of a lot of money," Milbury said at the time.

Brad Shaw was brought in as an interim coach when Steve Stirling was fired during the same set of moves in January. It's unclear what role, if any, he'll have with the team.

Shaw, who is in Ottawa, said last night he read online reports of the hirings and had received many phone calls asking about his status. But he hadn't heard any official news from the Islanders.

"You'd like to find out before the general public, but sometimes it happens pretty fast," Shaw said. "Sometimes the word leaks out.

"Enough people are talking about it that I have a lot of faith that it's going to happen. I don't really question it."

As part of their current re-structuring, the Islanders brought in Bryan Trottier as executive director of player development last week.

Smith, 51, was the Rangers' GM for 11 seasons before being replaced with Glen Sather in 2000.
