I honestly have no idea what is going on with Mediaone and AT&T in the Atlanta area. The 24.93.64.69 router is the exact same as it always is, killing my pings and transfer rates. I have about 8 tickets logged with tech support about this issue (all of them have been closed), have e-mailed 3 traceroutes to the National Help Desk at RR (as directed by technicians), and have talked to a tier 3 tech as well as e-mailing him a traceroute. There appears to be NO slow browsing alert for the Atlanta area, as if they won't even acknowledge that there is a problem with this router (and the routing in general). The fact that it takes me anywhere from 10 to 17 hops just to get out of the Road Runner network seems, at least to me, to be a problem as well. Basically, it seems that they are turning a deaf ear to any and all of my complaints. I have exhausted every avenue with their internal support, and am growing tired of calling them only to have them have me reboot the computer, reset the modem, and mail out a traceroute to the National Help desk, and have the problem occur. Who is there left to call? Maybe the Better Buisness Bureau could spur them to do something, as I certainly cannot get them to fix whatever is wrong with this router/and or my routing.

Are you refering to getting out of the local network or the backbone? The local netwrok (least in the area I am in) has 9 hops before it actually goes out into the net. That in itself never seemed to be a problem.

I feel you pain mahmood, I feel your pain. At&t's RR(mediaone) has awful routing, speeds during peak times and sometimes the speeds are awful none peak to. It's a same to see a company that used to be good at least in consistancy with their service go to sh^& the minute big and bad at&t came into the picture. I mean really what has at&t brought to us mediaone customers in atlanta except for slow downs. First off we are still capped at 1500/300(which we never reach by the way even with extensive tweaking cause the problem is on their end), second browsing has gotten slower than ever these past few months, and lastly the tech support has gone down the tubes. I wish there was more cable competition here so I could switch instead of having to put up with this cause right now the alternative(bellsouth) doesn't seem all that good either. My friend is on BS fast access and he's been disconnected every few days. I guess I'll have to wait for either wireless or ultraband if it ever makes it here.

Test it now guys...I think the new OC12 has been installed. My speed tests are back to normal in NC.

Post by Mahmood »

Err..test what? The problem I'm describing pertains only to one router, and it's in Atlanta.

Sorry to leave you out of the loop, but we've been having problems with RR/ATT/Mediaone on and off for the last two months. This is our place to bitch Image To answer your question, we are all interrelated because we (NC, Atlanta and I think FLorida) share bandwidth. So when I say that the promised OC12 (which was delayed by AT&T)has finally been installed for NC, your situation in Atlanta should be better too.

Actually, I've been here for the past 2 months complaining as well. Here's a shot of my "better" connection as of 2 minutes ago. Check the 5th hop.

Hmmm, I just pinged that trouble router 24.93.64.69 and got a 107 ping with 27ms min and 19ms max? Strange...VisualRoute says that the pissy router is in Charlotte..

Well, I just did a VisualRoute to Yahoo as well and we NC RR people are being routed through Charlotte too except we're pinging out of there (to Charlotte routers 24.93.64.97 and 24.93.64.45) at under 17ms.

If we are both going through Charlotte at 24.93.64.xx routers, then you should see some improvement soon...at least this was the case six weeks ago when NC RR installed a stop-gap OC3 line while "promising" that an OC12 would be installed ASAP. You can read the details at:
http://www.nc.rr.com/network.htm

I hope your situation improves. L8r.

That's definitely a problem in itself.

The problem could be in the route to the router. How many hops 'till you atcually hit the problem router?

glc1: you can see in the above screenshot, it's my 5th hop..it's always my 5th hop, as well.

Mahmood, your routing is terrible all the way around. When pinging Yahoo, I hit @Home's backbone on the third hop, and on the very next hop I'm on the net headed towards Yahoo. It takes a total of 8 hops, w/pings all under 60ms, to get me to yahoo.

Good grief! That's incredibly horrible! I get to Yahoo! in 7. Was on the phone with tier-two tech who got me through some crap last night and back to nomal speeds.

Make a phone call! Bypass the tier-one people and demand a tier-two tech!!

we gotta find something to do cause we are getting totally shafted. I wish there was like a higher up that went to this board and felt our pain. 25 hops to get to yahoo.com is ridiculous

Well, if going all the way to a 3-tier is giving no answers, then maybe it's time for a call to your state communications commission. You are not getting what you are paying for.

This kind of service and then you see ads all over giving free installs! Free 3 months service and all. This borders on criminal. Selling a service they KNOW that they cannot fulfill.

I have been reading over the posts and thought I would add my experience.

I am about 30min east of Atlanta and just got The Att cable modem.
I had problems at first with slow speeds. I think I was hitting like 384 and even lower.

After some tweaking in the registry Im surfing bells beach....lol
Super Fast guys.

I am happy so far with the performance of the modem. Online games are smoothe with pings around 70 to 100.
On dial-up I had to wait, then try to find a game that would barely allow me to play. Now I have so many choices it amazing.

Anyway, I really hate to hear that so many of you are having problems. I really wish I could help but I have no clue what to do.

I should also add that I am not pleased with the customer service.
Did any of you ever have a packard bell computer years ago and deal with thier tech support?

ROFL well I shouldnt really got to that extreme. Once I finally got someone on the phone from the internet dept. They were helpful. That of course was 3 calls and an hour and a half later.

I will close saying that I am not so sure Mediaone was ready to roll out cable modem. Maybe they will upgrade and work out the bugs soon.
Isnt that the way it is with everything thats new?

Just mine,

Serpent

Blue Jetta:

Tier 1/2/3 techs are not getting me anywhere. When I say that I've logged 8 (maybe 9?) tickets, I mean it. I have called that much in the past month, and absolutely nothing has come of it. The techs tell me that the usual number of hops within the RR network is 4. I told the one I got yesterday that I have anywhere from 9 to 17 within the RR network, and he said that it depends on which site I'm going to. WHen I told him that it doesn't matter where I'm going, he began to babble about "the internet being slow" and other assorted things which made absolutely no sense. Once again, if anyone has any suggestions on where to take my problems, they would be much appreciated. Tech support levels 1/2/3 are not getting me anywhere.

Serpent: I have noticed this for some people as well. I have a friend that lives in Peachtree Corners with AT&T/M1. He doesn't go through this hop, and his routing is not as bad as mine/Azazel's. Basically, it seems to be very area dependent. As you can see, my performance sucks, and any tweaking of the registry, or clearing the cache and going through a proxy like the techs recommend is not going to fix the fact that I am going through an overloaded hop, and the fact that I have 9-17 hops within the RR network.
Ganyon

Actually you are only hitting 11 hops on the RR network (normaly the most I ever see is 9)and then you are hitting backbone. That is normal at least from my experence and that in itself is not slowing you down

yeah it's incredible how mediaone's routing seems to be location dependant. I have heard from alot of ppl just outside the atlanta area who get great speed even some over the cap 1.8mbit and so on ...some even hit 2mbit on dslreports test. I tell you cable companies bias depends on your location. I wish it wasn't this way but that's the way it is...the luck of the draw...some ppl get better service then others because they happen to live in a certain area. it's so unfair Image
