GPS: Looking to purchase, need recommendations

Post by glc1 »

Hello SG community,

I'm new to GPS and not sure which brand/model to purchase. Here are my needs:
  • Basic automotive unit (don't need any marine or hiking features or any cutting edge extras);
  • Accurate turn-by-turn directions with voice prompts;
  • Powered by cigarette lighter or batteries (preferably rechargeable);
  • Color screen (that's easily read at night & during the day);
  • USA west coast coverage is all I need;
  • Removable storage (eg. SD cards) as opposed to hard drive/internal memory (because hard drive-based units seem to be more expensive & I don't need that much map content anyway);
  • Will be used in multiple cars (so it needs to be easily transferable)

Of course I remember. I'm sure there are quite a few who do. You were one of the most knowledgable and helpful members of the fourm!

How long has it been? Almost 3 years? You just kinda disappeared.

Wish I could be of better assistance on your gps quest.

Sound like the GARMIN StreetPilot series would be a good fit. I am a hiker / boater so I am limited in automotive gps experience. Here are some sites with plenty of info for you to start with.

Check this site first lots of information including q&a

Unfortunately, I don't have a Palm. Guess I could purchase one and then the GPS kit, but I think in my case a true GPS unit/system would be best since I wouldn't utilize the Palm's other features. Is your dad pleased with this setup? How accurate is it? Which model does he use it with?
Good read, thanks. The author seems to really like Garmin, even owns one. Think I'll check further into a Garmin.

Yea, that's the direction I'm leaning in now. I'm also looking into Navman, Lowrance, and TomTom.

Came to a partial decision today. I'm gonna go with a Pocket PC + GPS. Figure it'll be about the same price (or even less) than an in car GPS, and this way I'll have some more flexibility. Anyway, I just ordered a Dell Axim X50 520 from Dell. Now I just have to decide on a GPS receiver and software.

Thanks all,

Buck a foot, know about the future(that's futur for you american cats)

Why not get auto built in ground water? Its a meter, it measures...

Barometer is nice, only 200 years old but peeps make it to the basement OK

GPS is 3D, all you have to do is fly over and take two pictures and steroscopic it up, make you values?

Purchased a few weeks ago a Dell Axim X50 Mid (a day or two before the X51s came out) + Globalsat Bluetooth GPS receiver + Destinator PN GPS navigation software. Works great so far...
