video files - crashes/cpu usage

Post by master7 »

When I try to view a normal video file (.avi/mpg/mpeg) with Windows Media Player or whatever program (also tried Cvix player, DivX player, and Jplayer) I use to try to view, it freezes and utilizes 100% of the CPU according to Process manager.

When I try to view a .wmv my computer just freezes and has to be restarted via power switch.

please please please for the love of god help me.

Scan for viruses, spyware, you know, the usual, and make sure your OS is fully up to date.

Once those things are done, perhaps we can come up with something. ;) Don't forget to include what OS, version of MP, etc.

No viruses (no scanner, used http://housecall.trendmicro.com)
Spyware scanned/caught/deleted with Adaware/Spybot

Windows XP Pro SP1, upgraded

Would happen in Windows Media Player 9, as well as 10, and any other player I tried.

Any tips would be deeply appreciated.

Still freezes/cpu usage to 100%. With VLC I could still hear the audio, but video wouldn't show, and CPU went to 100% again.

but thanks for the suggestion, VLC seems like a really cool player.

Have HijackThis fix the following:

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [winupdts] lomocle.exe <--- never seen this, looks suspicious

O9 - Extra button: Ebates - {6685509E-B47B-4f47-8E16-9A5F3A62F683} - file://D:\Program Files\Ebates_MoeMoneyMaker\Sy350\Tp350\scri350a.htm (file missing) (HKCU)
O9 - Extra button: NeoTrace It! - {9885224C-1217-4c5f-83C2-00002E6CEF2B} - D:\PROGRA~1\NEOTRA~2\NTXtoolbar.htm (file missing) (HKCU)
O10 - Broken Internet access because of LSP provider 'xfire_lsp_10406.dll' missing

Also, HijackThis doesn't tell everything, if you already removed some malware and from what I see above I would also recommend doing the following:

Do a FREE online virus scan from Kaspersky Webscan.

I also HIGHLY recommend you download, update and scan with Spy Sweeper 4.0, there is a FREE 14-day trial and it is an EXCELLENT product.

It it also a good idea to run the Winsock Fix to repair your TCP/IP stack. (you will have to redo any tweaks for your connection if this is used)

Did you try opening the options in windows media player and lowering the Video Acceleration function under the Preformance tab.

Worked for about 5 seconds before freezing. Thanks for the suggestion though.

I'll get Hijack this again and have it fix the above things.

- Used HijackThis! and fixed those problems.

Scanning with the Anti-Virus...5% after about 10 minutes, I think I'll goto bed and check it tommarow.

If your cpu is slow, video card is older, or you have little ram or a ton of internet traffic, basicly something that takes up ram and cpu cycles. you could be having a severe playback problem. Did the video seem to run slow while you saw it? or does it play fine but the video just cuts out?

AMD 3200+
1gb ram

Runs slows then cuts out.

Ran the virus scanner, cleaned everything. Problem still occurs.

Not a bad Idea. I've had problems when I used the drivers the video card came with the computer would get horrbly chopy and run just terbble. But when I would let windows pick the drivers, it would run great.

OK Fixed it...weird fix though.

I guess the newest NVidia drivers is what screwed up my ability to view mpeg/mpg/avi.

I deleted them and got the "latest" beta drivers dated March 2nd.

Fixed everything, including the .wmv bug thats been bugging me for months.
<3 everyone and thanks for the help!
