Win XPpro 64bit advantages/disadvantages?

Post by Sava700 »

What are pros and cons on the 64bit version that people know of? I've heard alot of drivers for games and software are not supported with it and people are having issues with printers not working cause not being supported or whatever else you may have hooked to it. Also Looking for the cheapest place to order it. Newegg has it at 155$ but if I can find it cheaper and the pros out weight the cons I'll go ahead and order it.

I've heard reports that there are no anti-virus apps for the 64 bit version.

The Windows XP Professional x64 Edition Technology Advancement Program enables customers who have purchased Windows XP Professional (32-bit) to exchange it for Windows XP Professional x64 Edition. You will need to have an x64 processor (the AMD Athlon 64, AMD Opteron, Intel Pentium 4 with EM64T, or Intel Xeon with EM64T) to run the new software.

Drivers are slowly coming out for XP64. A lot are still beta or in some cases not complete, my ATI AIW 9800 is supported but not the TV tuner yet, still many workarounds. Only Avast personal AV is 64 usable, NOD32 has a beta out I've heard. Symac Corp also works in 64.

I'm still running my old box on XP until more apps and drivers show up. Kind of a pain but wanted to jump into XP64, maybe should have held off just a bit.........

Watch the fine print on that "Tech Advancement" you give up your XP key there is NO going back if 64 doesn't float your boat.

XP64 can be bought for less than the $155 if you have any comp shows around you, picked it up for $125 about 2 weeks ago (hardware sale required).

interesting reading... It hink the big thing that will draw me into it will be accessing the total 4Gigs of ram I'll have evenutally rather than it saying and only knowing 2.?? there instead.. Perhaps waiting a few months to go to 64bit will throw more drivers out.

I think at least a few more months. More widespread driver support is certainly important. Having applications that actually support it..and more importantly, utilize it. As you can see in the benchmarks, many, if not most right now, don't gain a thing. Some actually slow down a bit. As for the RAM, for the average home user, even the power home user, there's hardly anything out there that benefit from more than 2 gigs....not many benefit from over 1 gig. Currently it's mostly just geek bragging rights.

I already have 2 gigs of the Ballistix ram ready to put in my new pc which I'll stay with for a while..perhaps down the road when I decide to bump up to the 4 I'll get the 64bit also. Now I know they switch out the pro 32 for the 64upgrade..I wonder if they will continue to do that even if I bought the pro32 now?
