Cable condition question

Post by stoavio »

Hello,

A friend of my was talking to me about the performance of his DSL connection and suspects that the cable may have been hindering his connection speed because it appears to be oxidizing. He says that one of the copper things appears to be turning green. Is this something that could affect the performance of the connection? What factors normally have an affect on DSL connectivity/performance?

If the cable is damaged in any way, its at least worth the piece of mind to replace it.

Where is he seeing this oxidation? All your telephone wires should be sealed into connectors or Scotchlock patches. He shouldn't be seeing any "green" cable at all. If he does, he's getting a high moisture content on the line. It most certainly will affect your noise floor and prevent you from getting a clean reverse path back to the host. Make sure the cable isn't located near a window that is letting in cold air, or near a heat vent that is projecting a high humidity.
Big like a pickle!
