HELP! New computer gets a virus every 5 minutes or so!

Post by kpxryda »

I built a new computer Athlon XP 2500+ with 512 MB. All parts were purchased from Newegg. Ever since I built this computer, it has caused me nothing but headaches. The day I installed Windows XP Pro, I've been plagued with all kinds of viruses and trojans. I've formatted this computer about 30 times now and every single time I get a trojan as soon as Windows boots up for the first time. I have AVG installed with all the viruses updated. I have Spybot, Spydoctor, Ad-Aware all running to prevent spyware. I also have a pop up blocker to prevent any pop ups messing with the computer. I have done everything in my power to fix this computer and I'm at the point where I'm going to go insane. It detects a trojan in my winsystem32 directory EVERY 5-10 minutes. Everytime it detects something, I heal the file successfully, but after another 5-10 minutes, it detects another trojan in the same directory. These viruses are making my computer run like a 486 computer. It's so slow that you can't even use it. I end up having to format it over and over. Can someone please tell me what's going on and what's causing these trojans to come back after I remove them with my anti-virus program?

Have u tried scanning your winXP CD in a working computer, where did you get this copy of Win XP, is it a copy or an original, did you download it etc etc??

Probably best to scan the cd for viri in another computer first, that`ll eliminate the cd for starters!!!

You are probably first booting while your network is connected. And likely not using SP1 or SP2 slipstreamed. Get sp2 so it can be slipstreamed or immediately installed AFTER installing xp. And have the net disconnected at time of first boot. There are a few vulnerabilities is stock xp install such as Blaster and other network trojans that are probably floating around on your isp's network. patch the system w/ sp2 before you enable net access.
No one has any right to force data on you
and command you to believe it or else.
If it is not true for you, it isn't true.

that and do not have system restore on and clear the Temp Int Files. If you can't slip stream it - install SP2 before going on line. Running all your spyware
and AV programs in safe mode before going on line might help too.

I used this program to slipstream sp2 into my XP pro Cd. It takes a lot of the guesswork out of it. :)

AutoStreamer is a easy and quick slipstreamer for Windows Operating Systems. All that is needed for AutoStreamer to work is a source (that being an original Windows CD or a local share) and a Service Pack file.

Ok, guys, thanks for all suggestions. I just got Windows XP Pro Media Center with SP2. I'm going to install this on the computer along with all the anti-virus programs before connecting to the network. I have a quick question though, what do you guys mean by slipstreaming? And what exactly are these Service Packs? I'm assuming it's some sort of a security patch? Thanks again.

All the SP1 and later up updates/fixes are incorporated into the original
XP CD. It avoids installing XP and then the 278 mb file of patches/fixes.
More or less

- you can get a more detailed explanation here:

I always install XP with the network cable unplugged until my SP2, and my firewalls are up and running, you can order an SP2 Cd from MS, which is what i did, ssaves you a download.

Yes, SP2 is the latest for XP. There may be other updates and hot-fixes, but that's the latest service pack. :)
