How do I serve?

Post by gtrz »

Is there any easy to use free software so I can serve a file
directly from my box? I don't know anything about this stuff
but I'm trying to get a file (about 1 Gb in size) out there with Kazaa and it's not working to well. I'd like to just be
able to put up a link for people.. I'm using XP sp2.

What is your rated and actual upload? 1GByte = 8 Gigabits = 8000 Megabits = 8,000,000 Kilobits. Atr 256kb/second upload you are looking at about 9 hours to transfer that file - during which period your download will come to a crawl...

To answer your question directly, you probably want to set up an ftp server. There are major security implications there, so make sure you research that aspect.

I use Mediacom..

Don't know if it helps but I use Zonealarm Pro for a firewall.
I just installed this little prog called Fastream NETFile server but I don't have a clue how to use it..

I still don't know your rated upload. I don't know that program either. I might get something that has better documentation if it's giving you trouble.

ZA is fine for a personal firewall - I personally would hesitate to running a server with it as my only protection, but that's just me. I also would never run a internet server on windows...but some do say I'm a little paranoid.

Make sure you do a full system backup before you open your box up - random people on the internet will be able to access your machine. Ftp is an inherently insecure service.

You can always run an FTP server and give people a link to the server. Ceasar FTP(free) works fine. If your runing windows XP Professional, you can enable ISS and run both an FTP or HTTP server.

I would like to thank cyberskye and particularly glears. Cesar was simple and straightforward to setup. 5 minutes doing an install and reading their simple tutorial and I was cooking with Crisco. Thanks man!
I was trying to use Kazaa to share 1 file, omg what a mess!

Is there any way to monitor how much the user has downloaded? Right now I'm sharing an 1100 Mb file
and I'd like to know their progress.

If my memory serves me right, I think there is a "spy" option on Ceasar FTP which lets you see who is uploading and how much they have uploaded.

I tried that spy option before and it didn't appear to tell
me anything like that.
I tried out Smartftp since many seem to think it's pretty
good, I had it all set up right but it won't connect. I tried
everything. I had ZoneAlarm give it full permission and still
no go.. Too bad.

Smart FTP is a client software. You can't use it to run an FTP server. It's purpose is to connect to an FTP server.

I read up on making torrents and now doing my own and that seems to be the best solution for what I'm doing. Thanks for sharing your knowledge with me glears.
