how'd I do for a budget setup?

I needed it to be CHEAP and I think I've accomplished my goal, while providing a gaming/photoshop machine.

p4 2.4a prescott
Soyo - P4I865PE
512megs ram
160gig samsung HD
asus radeon9600xt vivo
350watt PS

The total cost is ~$425. I had 1/2 the ram laying around, plus a case and 19" monitor. The soyo mobo is free AR too, which I'll be sending registered mail.

Not sure what you mean by "free AR". However I've heard some really bad things about the Soyo boards. Evidently they crap out often.

really? i've only had one crap, out of the three that I'm running, and that was my fault (no surge protection, one good spike), and I'm still using it for folding.

set it up right and it'll last you for a good long time.

by the way: free AR = free After Rebate (TigerDirect, by any chance?)

Soyo is crap, but aside from that, it looks like a pretty darn good system. If you're going to overclock, remember that you need a VERY large heatsink; the SP-97 from Thermalright is hard to beat.

no oc'ing.

I actually STRONGLY regret buying the soyo mobo, but it's too late for that.

figure if I can get it up and running, it should last the long haul.
