anyone like Nitrous Oxide?

Post by Faust »

old friend of mine i see on occasion has a 40lbs (or is it 45lbs) tank he gets filled on occasion. he has a 4 port industrial regulator too, but prefers the giant "punching bag" balloons instead.

usually, i am good for about 2 balloons (maybe 20 or 30 minutes), but i start to worry about killing brain cells after that.

tastes kind of sweet, too. seems pretty harmless if done in moderation.

Place I use to camp at around the holidays (Memorial,July 4th,Labor Day..) a dude was there that use to go around in his car with a tank and sell those big balloons for 5 bucks i think. Its fun but it gives me a headache after while. I havent been camping in a few years though.

yeah, the novelty does wear off. one of those occasional opportunist kind of things for me, i guess. i don;t think i would go so far as to seek it out, but if it happens to be there..... maybe a lapse in common sense is OK every so often. :p

my dentist had always managed to talk me out of it for dental work. never tried it under those circumstances.

just put a plastic bag over your head. you will get the same effect and it wont cost you any money at all. all nos does is restict the amount of oxygen going to the brain so you might as well asphyxiate yourself to get high.

No, it's not.

edit:
Inhaling nitrous can lead to asphyxiation, even though it has a higher oxygen content than air. Your body cannot produce the heat necessary (about 525 degrees Fahrenheit) to break the bond between the nitrogen and the oxygen, leaving the oxygen content useless for respiration.

No2 can be fun on occasion. When I lived in Philly we used to have balloon parties all the time. I haven't done it in years though. I can't stand to feel out of it any more, go figure. ;)

i'm not disputing the chemistry involved. i am disputing what you claimed to be "the same effect".

i have experienced both both mild asphyziation as well as a nitrous high. they are different from one another.

hey! it;s a talent, mm-kay! :p

no, actually i choked on a catfish bone when i was a kid. did get it dislodged, but couldn;t inhale for (my guess is) 60 seconds... maybe a minute and 15 secs. without question, the most scared i have ever been.

anyways, there is more to nitrous than the potential for oxygen deprivation. i have seen people do what was apparently too much and their lips and flesh under their fingernails started to turn purple..... but nitrous is an anesthetic, and affects the body/mind in more ways than just starving them for oxygen.

the last i looked into it, it;s not 100% clear as to how nitrous oxide renders it;s anesthetic properties on the brain. how it;s absorbed into the fatty tissues and the further chemical interaction is known...... but precisely how and why it does what it does is (or was) unclear. maybe David will shine some light on this (being as how he's not only a dentist, but has a degree in chemistry i believe).

Incorrect. The pathway by which euphoria occurs in Nitrous oxide intoxication is not well understood, although the sensation is similar to that of nitrogen narcosis ("rapture of the deep"). When used in a controlled situation, such as a dental office, it is mixed with pure oxygen. Typically you would be breathing a far higher percentage of O2 than that of room air (25% N2O/75% O2 is the norm).

We used to get them so much at this sex shop the guy would get cases knowing we'd buy them. Had the canisters you could put about 3 cartridges in, usually 3 at once would make you pass out hahaha. Ahh the days....

As a kid I used to sell balloons from the tank at parties a lot. And you'd be surprised how much money I made, heheheh. I am lucky that no one I sold to was hurt, they may be stupid now, but not too badly hurt. :D

I believe that the "air" we breathe is ~78% nitrogen, ~21% oxygen, with the remaining 1% moisture, argon, etc... (According to NASA anyway... ;) ) (Of course nitrous oxide is composed differently...)

When I was a kid, my dentist used it on me. It didn't seem to be very effective but he assured me that the pain would be a lot worse without it.

Laughing gas, but I didn't think it was funny.

David, do you guys still use the stuff?

Enjoyed it a few times when I was a kid.

Buying balloons at Dead shows or a box or 2 of canisters. Hippy crack

Haven't tried one in years though.

Tom and Dave,

Nitrous oxide is not only one of the earliest anesthetics, it is one of the safest. As long as the patient is receiving at least 20% oxygen (25% O2 is our safety) they can buzz for hours. The level of consciousness can be controlled by titrating the N2O/O2 ratio

I have been trained in what is popularly referred to as "sedation dentistry". This includes an oral or nasally administered tricyclic (typically Halcyon®) concomitantly with nitrous oxide. Some practitioners might admix an opiate, however they stand a higher chance of morbidity.

Watch where you get the Nitrous from. Some places that sell it for racing put small traces of Sulfur (I think) to keep people from inhaling it. Also some industrial Nitrous contains an oil base and Chlorine gas.

Not a good thing to be inhaling.

An excellent point to make. Like non-potable ethanol, non-medical grade Nitrous oxide is tainted to prevent abuse and avoid surcharges.
