WinXP problem ...

Post by Grimson »

When I click my computer(on my step dads pc) I get a flashlight that just moves left to right over a folder. Once it finds them it opens up fast as hell but it's annoying and I don't know what's causing it, any ideas ??

TIA

A CD left in the CDRom or burner can cause this.

Ok, what to do if it's a burner problem ?? Does that mean it's dying ??

Thanks norm.

No, I didn't mean there is a problem, but if a CD is left in the tray opening My Computer takes a little while, as it waits for the CD to spin up.

No cd in either tray. It takes around 5 min. or longer to find the drives and everything initially.

Is it an old PC, and possibly lots of drives?
specs, and OS?

Beats me, sounds like one of the drives may be having problems, but not sure on it.

I built it(no funny remarks), it ran perfectly until he got a hold of it. It may have something to do with Pinnacle Studio 8 but that's been uninstalled until his upgrade to 9 arrives.

Beats me bud. That PC is plenty fast enough.

Is he connecting to network shares, mapped drives, ftp sites etc?

Filesharing yes.

Beats me too. It's never taken that long even with filesharing set up.

Thanks again norm.

shut down.

discconnect one ide device and startup, see if problem still exists. Follow these steps for each one.

My problem with this was solved by defragging all my drives.

You mentioned Pinnacle - video editing can frag a drive up nicely if you don't use a dedicated partition.
anything is possible - nothing is free

Same thing was happening to me until I uninstalled those stupid SP2 Hotfixes that slowed my PC to a crawl. I used to click on a folder, and nothing would happen... I was beginning to think it was because I made all my icons act as links... but it wasn't that. It was those cold-fixes.

Then again, that IDE suggestion sounds reasonable.

another thing I noticed was that if you don't have at least a gig open in your HDs then this can cause your system to lag due to *the lack of* virtual memory and physical memory.
