First off, I'm running WinXP home on a Sony Vaio PCV-RX650 desktop system.
Recently I installed Drive Image so I could make CD backups of my hard drive, but when I run the program I don't have the option to back up to CD. Upon further inspection I noticed that in device manager my CD and DVD rom drives are listed as an unknown device. The weird part is that the drivers are installed, the devices work normally and show up in my computer and windows explorer, but they just show up as a unknown device type category in device manager without the yellow exclamation point or question mark. It appears as though the CD/DVD drive category in device manager has disappeared.
Here is a picture of my device manager:
Look at the bottom, you'll see my drives
Let me first explain what I have tried to fix this:
Uninstalled CD RW drive and DVD rom drive, rebooted
Uninstalled CD RW drive, DVD rom drive and Secondary IDE controller, rebooted
Looked for problems in system information
Tried to manually install
Updated firmware
Ran CD Rom drive fix from dougknox.com (this essentially does the registry edit Microsoft recommends)
Ran Adaware
Ran Spybot
Ran a full system scan with Nortons and several free Internet virus scanner
Checked running services and applications
Booted in safe mode to see if some type of startup item or service was causing this
Does anyone have any ideas on what this might be?
Thanks in advance!
