Setting up my wireless network

Post by Altema »

Im on win 2k and trying to install Dell's router to my computer. I heard you dont need the software and could edit it in its ip http://192.168.2.1/

Anyways im confused where the wires go. The wire from my ethernet card goes to where [Lan 1, or Internet slot] ?

Ill have more questions because i dont seem to be setting it up correctly =(

no instructions?

the Ethernet cable from your modem goes to your router
there should be a 'WAN' Port

depending on how many ports the router has.....

there should be either ports labeled as LAN1 LAN2 and so forth..
or just
1, 2, 3, and so forth..
that's where you'd plug in your computer or computers..

not sure what your're asking about the wireless part..
also your comp should be set to obtain IP add. from DHCP initally..(not neccesary, but much easier that way...)

Link: Diagram of Broadband Connection with Cable/DSL Router.

After you connect you start the Internet browser and you type into the address place.

There wernt any specific instructions on how to install it. It told me how to install the software but that didnt work. Others have the same problem so im trying to install the router without the software.

The Ports i have are

Internet, Lan1-Lan 4

Do i connect the ethernet from my 10/100 card to the Internet Slot and Connect another ethernet cable from my cablemodem to Lan 1 Spot?

no...

what ppls are talking about is this;

some ISPs use the Mac Add. of your NIC for authentication, so if
you hook your router to your modem, the mac add is diff.

to get around that, you spoof the mac add of your NIC through the router...

I called dell and it was because of that MAC addy.

I basically did that. Found the MAC addy of my NIC and put it into the router config. Thanks for the help everyone and esp Bala

altema ,
if you want setup router without software , you must know about your ip and dns
for the 1st time you more easy to setup with the software , after you can connect to internet you only follow the instruction in the monitor
after you setup your router you can see the ip and so on , so you can setup without software via 192.168.2.1 in the next time
