Trying to speed Charter cable connection!

Post by NIVO »

ok, i'm new to this and found alot of info around the net, came here and it seems like this is the best forum!

i've printed info and things to help... but i'm comfused...!

some tips say to use 256960 for the RWIN.

others mention to use between 32,000-64,000?

and one mentioned on a recommendation to use 24440!?

this is what i got with using the TCP optimizer:

TCP options string = 020405b40103030001010402
MTU = 1500
MTU is fully optimized for broadband.
MSS = 1460
Maximum useful data in each packet = 1460, which equals MSS.

Default Receive Window (RWIN) = 64240
RWIN Scaling (RFC1323) = 0 bits
Unscaled Receive Window = 64240

RWIN is a multiple of MSS
Other values for RWIN that might work well with your current MTU/MSS:
513920 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 8)
256960 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 4)
128480 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 2)
bandwidth * delay product:

Your RcvWindow limits you to: 2569.6 kbps (321.2 KBytes/s) @ 200ms
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 1027.84 kbps (128.48 KBytes/s) @ 500ms
MTU Discovery (RFC1191) = ON
Time to live left = 49 hops

TTL value is ok.
Timestamps (RFC1323) = OFF
Selective Acknowledgements (RFC2018) = ON
IP type of service field (RFC1349) = 00000000

the computer is running a pentium 4 @ 1.7ghz, 60g HD, Charter pipeline(cable-768/128)

http://dslnuts.com/ping.shtml use this formual to determine right rwin. I say use the 64240 we try to keep it lower due to fewer retransmits. I do sometimes switch to a little higher one when using kazza and or winmx better throughput, some connections use the lower ones better then high. It all depends on latecncy on line, quality of the line so many variables. So I say try to keep lower rwin, it is trial and error but the best way to keep proper is the link i showed at top. :D

another question...

Post by NIVO »

i was reading somewhere that it is better to use the ethernet cable instead of the USB for the cable modem..

how would i disable the USB and use the ethernet if it does matter?

i have a broadcom 440x 10/100 integrated controller (whatever that means!)

charter pipeline but i think it's the 768/128? how do i know which one i have?

Using Ethernet is better because it is a bit more stable and sometimes faster, especially if you have a lot of USB devices.

If you have USB you just unplug the USB cable going to the USB Nic or Modem, install a NIC if you don't have one, get an ethernet cable, and then setup the NIC to use the DHCP of your LAN or ISP for DNS and IP addy.

I gather you have an onboard NIC, that should work good, I'd recommend trying that out instead of installing a PCI NIC.

BTW, if your ISP says your caps are 768/128, you have 768kbps download and 128kbps upload rates. Thats 96/8KBps download/upload. :D
