Unable to contact server messages

Post by Far-N-Wide »

Is there a setting that can be made to limit server contact attempts? I have seen some messages going on for 12 hours or more with no contact being possible to upload WUs to servers.

I've been restarting the folders that do not make contact. usually they download new files and continue just fine. But when the new file finishes, It will try to resent the previous job. Resulting with no contact and retries repeatedly without success. I have been deleting these after 2 or 3 days of failure and re-installing with a new app.

What client and version are you running?

Stanford is drawing down support and work units for some older clients. You might go to the download section and make sure you have the latest.

I am getting these messages on all 6 folding apps I have running. If this is normal, I'll hush up. I just started multi folding when I noticed I had 8 CPUs and only the one install running. I'll add 2 more for a total of 8 when I have time or when resolve the idle folders that I have running. I hate to have them waiting or trying to send results to servers that are not there or are not accepting results.

Just now when I got home from work I see 4 out of 6 idle trying to send results like below.

Ok, the 111 server is showing its up, but Stanford has had it down working on it over the past couple of days, so that may be your problem.

http://www.evga.com/forums/tm.aspx?m-4464

If I might suggest going to this link and if your interested you can download the file Linux FAH Image v1.2 from Mirror 1 (zip), and then the VMWare Player 3.0. (Make sure you get 3.0 and NOT 3.1 as 3.0 allows 8 cpus while 3.1 only allows 4) And if you don't have a Passkey from Stanford you can request one from here.

http://fah-web.stanford.edu/cgi-bin/getpasskey.py

Unzip the Linux FAH Image v1.2 and I make it create itself in the C:\ area so that it will appear as C:\FAH in my main directory.

Now run VMWare Player 3.0 (when it gets started it will ask to download newer version, select NO).

Select Play a Virtual Machine and point it to your C:\FAH directory.

It will run the Virtual Machine and then stop. You should be able to locate a line that looks something like this: 192.168.2.111

Open up Internet Explorer and type in the address you received. This will bring up a page that lets you put in your user id, team number, passkey, and any other things you want to check. But for the first 3 days I would only input that info. Select the Reboot on Submit box and then click on the Submit button.

At the end of 3 days of folding stop the machine from folding with a Ctrl-C and return to Internet Explorer and the address given.

Click Enable Bigadv
Click Enable Langouste De-Coupler
Click Reboot on Submit
Click Submit

Hopefully I've made it clear, but if not don't hesitate to ask questions. That's what we're here for is to help each other.

Thanks Rick, I saw that explained on another thread. I'll look into that down the road. For now I plan on folding to my 1000th Wu as I am set up now. Then I will throttle back to 1 or 2, as the bedroooms heating up with the 6 I have going now.

When I expand my network and move some stuff around to the basement, I'll look into the Linux shell.

Thanks and happy folding. :thumb:

Desided to follow the directions...

I ignored the update option you mentioned.

It asked me to allow downloading some tools. I said remind me later.

the IP it gave me is 192.168.1.102

Going to that page the following info displayed.

==============================================
Username Far-N-Wide
Team Number 15
Passkey I got this already
Hostname FAH
Workgroup WORKGROUP
FAH Auto-Startup checked
Enable Bigadv blank
Enable Advmethods blank
Cores 2
Enable OneUnit blank
Enable Verbosity blank
Enable Langouste De-coupler blank
Enable RamdiskSize (KB) Use TMPFS blank
Automatic Backup (hourly) blank
Enable NTPD blank
Enable DHCP blank
Static IP Address blank
Netmask blank
Gateway blank
Primary DNS 68.87.85.102 correct for Denver
Secondary DNS 68.87.69.150 correct for Denver
Enable MPICH_NO_LOCAL blank
Kernel Nehalem Core 2 AMD
Reboot on Submit Checked
==============================================

Host name FAH is this my c:\FAH folder?
Workgroup? leave this alone or what?

Ramdisk looks nice... I have been thinking about getting more then 6 gigs of ram for just this stuff. I have a ASUS P6T V2 Deluxe, I7 920 CPU and can drop in 6 more gig no problems :)

What else can I check to make this go any better then what you mentioned in the previous post?

Oh when the Virtual Machine restarted I see

FAH login: autofah (automatic login)
No mail.
root@fah:`# <<< (and a flashing curser)

Having no real linux experiance. what's next?

Bring up on you browser.

Username Far-N-Wide
Team Number 15
Passkey I got this already
Hostname FAH
Workgroup WORKGROUP

Enable Bigadv blankgo backin and check this after you have finished 3 days of folding or counted 10 workunits as haveing been returned
Enable Advmethods blank
Cores 2Change to 8 if pc dedicated to folding, otherwise 7
Enable OneUnit blank
Enable Verbosity blank
Enable Langouste De-coupler blankCheck this, what it does is that when you finish a work unit and start transmitting it will take over the transmitting and allow you to download a new work unit while still transmitting. Will save up to 40 minutes
Enable RamdiskSize (KB) Use TMPFS blank
Automatic Backup (hourly) blank
Enable NTPD blank

I don't use the Ramdisk cause on most of my pc's I have a 32GB SSD which speeds up writes a lot. On bigadv you will at the end of folding write up to 100 mb of data to disk which may take up to 30 minutes or more. Ramdisk speeds it up to 2-3minutes. Disadvantage is you may lose the work unit if your pc reboots/freezes unexpectedly.

What else can I check to make this go any better then what you mentioned in the previous post?

FAH login: autofah (automatic login)
No mail.
root@fah:`# <<< (and a flashing curser)

Having no real linux experiance. what's next?

Click your mouse where the curser if flashing.
Ok after this you can monitor the results by typing: tail -f fah-out.log
You Will need to do a Ctrl-ALT to get your curser back

If you want to also monitor using HFM or other monitoring programs point your client to: \\192.168.1.102\fah

If you need to reboot for any reason, make sure you click the x in order to close the VMWare program and wait until the icon disappears to start your reboot. Then when you restart it will pick right up where you left off.

Hope this helps. If not just ask away and we'll give it another try.
