Drive connection won't work

I'm trying to help somebody debug their wireless network, and I need some avenues to follow.

The guy has a cable connection going to a wireless router (I think it'a a Linksys, but I'm not sure). He has a desktop and a laptop, each with a wireless connection.

The problem is that each machine has no ...

I understand, cyberskye. I was just suggesting that his grandson needs to be a little more proactive, and get support a little closer to the problem. Well, at least closer than a grandfather posting on a message board.

Heck...flyfisher -- I live in the Harrisburg area. If you want (or if HE wants ...

No offense, guys, but flyfisher -- shouldn't your kid be talking with the network/IT support people at the university? I'm sure this is something they can help him with in about 10 minutes.

I thought colleges sent out computer requirements to new students before the school year...didn't your kid ...

No real problems here, either. I got the SMC stuff because at the time I was ready to buy, I had read some negative user reviews on Linksys devices, and the Netgear was almost universally out of stock. The SMC items were reasonably priced and immediately available.

I'll stay ignorant and happy, I ...

FWIW, it would be far easier (and more reliable) to use a dedicated hub or access point. I guess you have money to shell out for a handful of computers and network cards, but not for just one hub?

I see that I can get an 8-port 10/100 switch at newegg.com for $29.

From the 404 and 500 result codes, I'd think that your server isn't handing stuff out to (I think) Nimda. I run some UNIX servers, and I see a lot of those error messages. You should be okay.

I'm also thinking that you could run some type of NAT program on one of your PCs, and then share out the connection through that box. But there are performance issues with that...and ultimately it would be better to either pay for the extra IPs or else go for a hardware router.

I use the Network Associates (aka "McAfee") product, mostly because the price is right. I have been using some perl scripts to do rudimentary access to my various mailboxes, but this commercial site looks pretty good. The only downside I can see is that I can't fudge the "from" and "reply-to" fields. Yeah, I know it's a security feature, but there are times when I'm in one e-mail ...

I remember reading that with 95/98/ME versions of Windows, there was a potential problem if you moved the swap file to a drive other than the one that contained the OS. I've grown accustomed to putting the OS on C:, and installing apps on other drives, if they're there.

Maybe MS wised up with 2000 ...

...I managed to temporarily procure my wife's "work" laptop -- a fairly recent IBM with Win98 installed. And the SMC card worked great.

The problem I had was with the interface (semi-SCSI) drivers that loaded from config.sys. I went out and bought a *real* SCSI card, and everything works like a charm. The bonus is that I can now attach other devices (like an external Zip drive) in the chain.

Shouldn't be a problem

If you're using all 802.11b compliant equipment, they SHOULD all talk together. I've heard people say that it's best to buy all from one manufacturer, however, to reduce finger-pointing in the event you might have problems.

Based on customer comments at buy.com, and also on availability (I was ...

I just bought some stuff from buy.com . The price was pretty comparable, especially since they were offering free shipping. One of their warehouses is not too far away (I live in central PA).
