Why such low caps on uploads?

Why is it that download caps are so much higher than upload caps in most cases? I'm sure it's a money/profit reason that cable companies have, but what is it about upload speeds that they are capped more than download?

Lol, I love charter pipeline. Yes the download speeds are slow. I have a 768/256 transfer rate for 60 dollars a month. But I don't really use cable for downloading. I use it for gaming. The great thing about charter is that I'm in St. Louis and I ping 40-50 to almost ANY server! I mainly play quake ...

Hmm, sounds nice. I use my cable mainly for the excellent pings that I can get, and I rarely use it for downloading anything bigger than 20 megs. So it would benefit me to set a low RWIN value? Right now it's set at 20440. My connection speed is 768/256

A lil confused about RWIN

It seems there is some kind of ration with ping and bandwidth when dealing with RWIN values. Is this true? It seems that a lower RWIN reduces ping and bandwidth, and a higher RWIN increases ping and bandwidth. Can someone confirm this?

Actually I've conducted a test as to whether or not that worked. I tried a class 1 Idaho potato and a potato grown from my backyard. While neither one seemed to increase my network capabilities, I did find the potato in my backyard a bit more "aromatic." :D

What's an NIC have to do with it?

I'm obsessed with lowering my latency even by 1 millisecond if I can do it. I understand that almost all of it has to do with the lines and my own isp, but anything on my end I can do, will do. Right now the cheapest thing i have in my system is a 10 dollar linksys nic from wal mart. Do you think i ...

Looks great.
I've started the process. I now have a ramdisk R: drive but it says there's 0 bytes available. In the registry it says I've devoted a meg to it.
Any solutions?

Nother problem. Where is the startup folder in XP?

Ramdisk and XP

I read this wonderful idea of a tweak at cablenut's explaining the benefits of a properly set up ramdrive. I have two questions though.

1) Do these ramdrive instructions include XP? ie. Can I do this with XP pro?

2) Are there noticeable benefits to creating this ramdrive? Does the mileage vary ...

I saw that thread earlier and tried it, thanks. I don't have ATT, but I know that pretty much everywhere I go goes through the att backbone in New Jersey first. I actually have Charter and have had it for a couple years. Does that WAN ip of 192.168 give any clue as to what my problem may be? Let me ...

Intermittent cable loss on WinXP

I use win xp and my cable has been great so far. But, alas, a problem has arisen. Pings, download speeds are topnotch and so is browsing, but after five minutes or so, I can't do anything. Can't play online, can't browse download, nuthin. funny thing is my router's lights are all good and my cable ...

Just to clarify, so when this happens it's usually a problem with my packet being sent from my isp, not ATT accepting my packet? Is there a difference? I don't know, I don't understand the process of a ping.

Can someone look at tracert please?

I've had pings in 40's through 50's all through the US. I'm very lucky. But just the past couple days, my ping went from 50 to 350. I play a lot of quake 3 and this just sucks. Here's a graph to my favorite server:

Remember that they are taking on tens of thousands of new customers and that you have just recently switch over. I bet it will be a couple weeks before you'll see the full advertised speed of your line. I've been with charter for a couple years. I download 928 kbps on my 768 capped line :P

Cable putters out

Hi, I'm new to the boards, but I do know a little bit about cable modems. I've encountered a problem. I power on my cable modem and it takes 30-40 minutes to connect. The receive light flashes then goes solid, then the send light flashes, and it goes back to the receive flashing. Finally, it ...
