Network Neighborhood

For anyone interested, this is a not so new but good article about how the Network Neighborhood works. It's from Linux Magazine (2001).

Here you go:

it depends one what you are doing. if you are remotely logged in somewhere you will have many many packets in both directions.

and if you mean just web pages, then what do you mean by "awhile"? a tcp packet will hold no more than 1500 bytes. let's put it this way:

i've been awake for 15minutes ...

I really can't find much on LCNA COM server, whatever it is. The only thing close is some kind of training. You should look so see if the service is set to run in Windows. Otherwise, see if you have any apps installed that may relate to it. It could be some software that came with the NAT box.

Think about it for a second. If you access a webpage, ftp server, etc. how will the server know where to send the packets back to for you to receive them. Knowledge of someone's IP (who you connect with) is inherent in the architecture of the Internet and is no threat at its face. The addresses 192 ...

Yeah that's right it's not. Did you mean that *all* machines are behaving in this same flaky manner or only one? I just re-read. I thought this was all machines. So... anyone got any ideas all you MCSECSSEECMSEE (or something) people. I use Windows 2000 and Linux, don't know much about 98 and kin.

I don't exactly understand what you are asking?

If those pages are are served out to users then likely they will just be served as fast as your connection allows. 70bytes*1000(the k part)*8bits*25 = 14,000,000bits. Now if you are asking what kind of data rate you need to serve all this in the 15 ...

Could be apps. Try Netscape, IE and maybe an FTP client with both numbered and named addresses. Incidentally I found that running your own DNS server internally can make your connection a bit faster sometimes. It also saves the hassle of overloaded DNS servers from the ISP and makes it not quite so ...

Most applications that allow download or upload display the data rate. Just search on Google. There are quite a few depending on what platform you are on and what you need to run it.

Rnaapp is part of dial up networking. It runs when your modem attempts to connect to the internet. Do you still have a modem installed in your computer? Do you have any applications that have an "auto-update" setting that may be trying to use the modem instead of your cable / dsl connection?

What you are probably thinking about is throttling. This is when the "amount" of bandwidth is limited at some point (usually at or for a server on outgoing channels or some point where lines converge).

I'm not really sure there is a simple way to do that on just a local client. You could always ...

Do you....

have separate IPs from your ISP for all there machines? If so they go cable -> hub -> 3 machines. Otherwise if you are trying to use NAT as I suspect then make sure it is setup correctly on the 2k machine. 169.x.x.x is an auto assignment from Windows on that SAME machine. That is a Windows machine ...

Firewalls will not "CLOSE" ports. They will block them. To close a port simply shut off the service which is running on that port.

If you're not running any servers... (this includes ident) just block all incoming requests using whatever filter your kernel version supports... if you wanna run sshd or a web server or something just leave those services only open and make sure you take strong auth measures for them.
