You'll need to do a few things in order to get a dual system working properly.

The most important thing is to install you boot loader into the master boot record or else you'll never be able to boot the second OS.

Yeah, load the proper module (not sure what it is), then mount the partition with:

mount /dev/hda1 /mnt/c_drive -t ntfs -o ro

You could always use Lynx to browse SUSE's ftp server and download newer X packages. If you where using Debian you could just use apt to install and configure the latest X packages.

ANother method would be to edit XF86Config-4 and temporarily use the ati driver for your video card.

Morphix is another Debian based Linux-Live CD. It's got several different iso's that you can choose from: gamming, lightGUI, heavyGUI and KDE.

I recomended Knoppix because I have never tried Morphix yet, but maybe the gamming iso would be better for your kids.

You can't access the CD drive because you don't have the proper permissions to do so. The ZIP drive won't work untill you configure the kernel to recognize it.

Anything over a 233MHz CPU is plenty of power for any Linux distro!

I have to warn you, Linux is not a windows replacement, it's a windows alternative. Big difference. If you want to install Linux to play movies and run games your probly better off installing WIndows 95 or 98 on that laptop.

Konquerer is very light and supports the latest HTML specs and netscape compatible plugins. I have used Dillo. It is very fast and very small, but it lacks many features which makes a webbrowser complete. (it does'nt even support tables)

BTW, Slackware is harder to use then Debian :D

Konqueror is lighter and compatible with all of the same plugins as Mozilla. Konqueror is also the basis for Mac OS X's new browser.

Unless you've encountered a serious bug in your motherboards BIOS an upgrade is not recomended.

For one, if your upgrade fails your motherboard will no longer boot.

If your running Debian and want the security of OpenBSD take a look into Trusted Debian and Gibraltar Firewall .

Just add their deb sources to your list and apt-get dist-upgrade.


The BSD's are okay, but they have less hardware and user support then Linux does, just something to think about :D ...

All the more reason not to run NT on it. NT is too bloated and too resource hungry for an old 486.
