The sound is definitely coming from the router itself. I think I'll email Linksys and see what they say.

I don't think it is too likely to get two bad routers in a row, however I did get two bad hard drives in a row once.

Yes. I plugged it in in a room across my house from where it is now. Even without any of the network cables plugged in it makes the sound.

What are you plugging it into?

Anything nearby that could cause interference? Such as a honking speaker, or subwoofer? Any unusual outlets nearby? Odd lighting?

Linksys BEFSR41 making noise

Yesterday I bought a brand new BEFSR41 and plugged it in and it made this awful high pitched squeeling noise. It worked perfectly but I didn't like that sounds so I went back to the store to get a replacement. So I got a new one and it does the same thing!

Has anyone else noticed this?

One more question. If I buy a router, will I be able to use my crossover cable to connect one of the PC's? From what I understand I will be able to use the uplink port with the crossover cable to a PC.

Actually I got it to work but for some reason it only works when I turn my PC by holding the power button. If I shut down in Windows and it turns off automatically, then it won't wake up (on LAN).

What is going on here?

Is it worth buying a router?

I have two computers in my house which are directly connected together via crossover cable. The server machine has two NICs. The server machine also happens to be my rig, the other system is the family computer. So far I haven't come across any big issues with this setup but I was wondering if it ...

I would also like to know how to do this. My motherboad does support it and so does my NIC.

I'm trying Outpost but it seems to leave the 135
RPC port open. That is not a good thing. Am I doing something wrong?

I checked it with Shields Up and grc.com

Is it safe to use ZoneAlarm 2.6?

Currently I have the latest version of the free ZoneAlarm and I do not like it at all. For some reason it keeps blocking file/print sharing and there are no options to see what programs have access to the net.

ZA 2.6 was great and worked perfectly but are there any security risks in using that ...

Death of Napster = faster internet for all?

Think about it. There are 10,000 songs per second being downloaded using Naptser all the time. Once Napster is shut down, the core MP3 community will be lost. Sure there are alternatives but nothing is as easy to use as Napster. So with the millions of users suddenly being cut off, the world's ...

Agreed. I wouldn't invest a penny because there is no where to find out technical information. Pretty lame right now, they said it is fast but they can't tell us why it is fast.

My friend has that problem on dialup but when he got DSL it disapeared. I think it took too long to connect or something.
