Does this happen for every host name? For example if you try to ping www.ibm.com then you will get an invalid host name error message?
If that is the case then it is definitely the DNS server on the ISP end is not functioning or the IP address for the DNS server was wrong ...

Depending on where you downloaded from and where you uploaded to. But as you stated in your post you got 120kB/sec download (with a capital W which mean 120kBytes/sec) that is a T1 speed. As you uploading speed, 6kBytes/sec to a dial up modem is very good!

Until now, I have not seen any cable modem that has telnet feature. Plus according to the cable modem technology, this box does not need to be configured, at least by the user. Cable modem is a very "dumb" IP router, it only route IP packets and nothing else.

What you mentioned will work fine. Cable modem is just a "router" that only routes IP packets it won't route IPX or NetBIOS at all so no one can see your IPX shared files accept for computers within your LAN.
