Yahoo Inc. said in a court filing Monday that Facebook has infringed 10 of its patents covering advertising, privacy controls and social networking. Yahoo's patent lawsuit follows Facebook's announcement of plans for an initial public offering that could value the company at about $100 billion.

"Yahoo's patents relate to cutting edge innovations in online products, including in messaging, news feed generation, social commenting, advertising display, precenting click fraud, and privacy controls. Thee innovations dramatically improve user experience, privacy and security and enhance the ability of advertisers to connect with users," the filling reads.

"Facebook's entire social network model, whcih allows users to create profiles for and connect with, amongst other things, persons and businesses, is based on Yahoo!'s patented social networking technology."

Facebook spokesman Jonathan Thaw said Facebook learned of the lawsuit through the media.

"We're disappointed that Yahoo, a longtime business partner of Facebook and a company that has substantially benefited from its association with Facebook, has decided to resort to litigation."
