Verizon and Google announced a joint effort focused on bringing their respective edge computing services to customers via the telecom giant's 5G network. The collaborative offering will combine Verizon 5G Edge with Google Distributed Cloud Edge to offer both compute and storage services.

Aside from private 5G Edge, the companies also plan to develop public 5G mobile edge computing for developers and enterprises, allowing for deployment of applications at the edge of Verizon's wireless network in various locations throughout the country.

As part of the debut, the pair revealed their edge computing capabilities already have their first customer in Ericsson. The first trial use case involves Verizon's Sensor Intelligence - attaching a camera to an autonomous mobile robot that can scan packages to maintain real-time inventory in the warehouse.
