Twitter is reportedly working on creating a subscription platform for its social network, according to a new job listing. As a result of the news, Twitter Inc. shares rose as much as 12% Wednesday.

"We are building a subscription platform, one that can be reused by other teams in the future. This is a first for Twitter!" according to the posting. "Gryphon is a team of web engineers who are closely collaborating with the Payments team and the Twitter.com team."

In truth, subscriptions could open up a whole new world of products and apps that leverage Twitter’s vast reach and swathes of data, or it could help position Twitter as a viable business for creators and influencers. In effect, Twitter could be building something similar to Patreon.

It's important to note that this isn't Twitter's first time considering subscriptions for its service, as it conducted a survey a few years ago to determine if users would be willing to pay for breaking new alerts or other services.
