The social networking micro-blogging service Twitter has finally caved in on web advertising and has announced a Promoted Tweets feature.

Twitter co-founder Biz Stone blogged that the company will be launching a web advertising model. In a bid not to scare of the Twitterati who don't want to be victims of advertising, Stone sweated that Promoted Tweets will be non-traditional, writing, "Over the years, we've resisted introducing a traditional Web advertising model because we wanted to optimize for value before profit."

However, putting profit before value, Promoted Tweets is due to launch with a selection of advertising partners including Best Buy, Bravo, Red Bull, Sony Pictures, Starbucks, and Virgin America.

Stone said that the service is simply advertisers tweeting their wares. The tweets will be displayed "at the top of some Twitter.com search results pages" and "will be organically sent to the timelines of those who follow a brand."

Twitter COO Dick Costolo has been feeding titbits of information about the advertising service to the press since last November, when he teasingly announced that Twitter wanted an organic ads service similar to Google's.
