Time Warner Cable dealt with a major Internet outage early Wednesday.

Starting at 3 a.m. today, routine network maintenance escalated into a major issue with the Time Warner Internet backbone and caused disruption with the company's Internet and On Demand services. The outage affected the entirety of Time Warner Cable's network, affecting 11.4 million high-speed Internet customers.

TWC announced through its official Twitter account that it was quickly working to correct the problem.

"We're working to restore services to all areas as quickly as possible; no ETR. Tweets will be delayed while this is addressed."

Strangely, the widespread U.S. outage immediately followed a number of other recent incidents, namely, outages caused by the DDoS attacks on Sony's PlayStation Network, Microsoft's Xbox Live, and Blizzard's Battle.net service on Sunday, Charter Communications outage over the weekend, as well as an incident overseas in which Virgin Media customers across the U.K. were unable to access the internet Tuesday morning due to network issues.
