TikTok confirms its workers in China can see European user data

TikTok Global has said some of its China-based workers are able to access data from UK and European users, following concerns that the Chinese government may get hold of such information. The news comes just days after a senior U.S. regulator called for the social media phenomenon to be banned.

In an update on its privacy policy, TikTok said it allows "certain employees within our corporate group”, including in China, "to access to TikTok European user data".

The continued lack of guardrails on data privacy has prompted the Federal Communications Commission's (FCC) highest ranking Republican, Brendan Carr, to call for TikTok's ban, claiming a lack of confidence user data won't find "its way back into the hands of the [Communist Party of China]."

Amid those fears, TikTok has spent months negotiating with the federal government on a possible national security agreement that would allow it to continue operating in the United States. TikTok has also migrated US user data from proprietary servers in the US and Singapore to cloud-based servers hosted by Oracle.
