T-Mobile's Magenta Max plan comes with true unlimited data

T-Mobile is adding a new plan to its lineup, this time designed for its most demanding data users. Called Magenta Max, the new plan will replace the existing Magenta Plus offering and become available starting on Feb. 24. The new Max offering notably features no smartphone data throttling regardless of how much 4G or 5G data you use in a month.

This is big, because one of the biggest complaints about 5G is that faster data speeds are kind of irrelevant if you end up hitting your monthly data cap faster. Currently, AT&T's top-tier Unlimited Elite ($60 per line a month with three lines) plan caps out at 100GB of data, after which you might get throttled, while Verizon's high-end Get More Unlimited ($65 per line with three lines) plan could start throttling speeds after just 50GB of data.

"T-Mobile has lit up the highest-capacity 5G network available — a network so powerful it can start unleashing the power of 5G to deliver unlimited premium data," the company said.

Magenta Max promises "unlimited 4K UHD" video streaming compared to the DVD-quality (or 1080p at best) limit that comes with many unlimited plans. T-Mobile is also extending the company's "Netflix on Us" promotion to single-line custosmers.

For a limited time, T-Mobile says you can get the Max plan for $47 per month — but that's if you have three lines on your account already and you take advantage of its autopay promotion. Single-line customers can look forward to paying $85 per month with autopay. Alongside the plan, the carrier is introducing a promotion for those who want to switch. If you come with your own device to the carrier, it will port your phone number for free. Additionally, current AT&T and Verizon customers can get up to $650 in the form of a prepaid card when they switch over.
