SoftBank Corp. President Masayoshi Son, drumming up support for the idea of merging his Sprint Corp. with T-Mobile US Inc., said he can give U.S. Internet users a new option with lower prices and faster speeds. "We need a certain scale," Son said. "But once we have enough scale to have a level fight, a three-heavyweight fight, I would like to have a real fight, not a pseudo fight. If I could have a real fight, I would go for a massive price war - a technology war. If I could have a real fight, I would go for a massive price war - a technology war. I would go for price competition very aggressively, and network competition to create the world's best network."
Son said he also wants to upgrade infrastructure to provide for faster Internet access in the U.S. He is reframing his argument for consolidation in the U.S. mobile-phone market this week to advocate for wireless broadband as an alternative to cable. "How can the American people accept the fact that it is No. 15 in the most important information highway in the next century?" Son asked his audience at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, referring to the mobile broadband speed ranking for the United States. "The mobile Internet, the Internet highway, is the most important infrastructure for the 21st century," Son added. "We would like to make the deal happen."
