Spotify on Monday announced plans to lay off around 6% of its global workforce in an effort to reduce costs and improve efficiency. Spotify, which is based in Sweden but listed on the New York Stock Exchange, sent an internal memo to staff Monday announcing the layoffs.

The company's CEO, Daniel Ek announced the layoffs as part of an organizational restructure, which is aimed at increasing efficiency, reducing costs, and speeding up decision-making. "As part of this effort, and to bring our costs more in line, we've made the difficult but necessary decision to reduce our number of employees," he writes.

Spotify has a total workforce of around 9,800 people, which means the cuts impact about 600 employees. According to its LinkedIn profile, the company employs 5,400 people in the U.S. and 1,900 in Sweden.

The news comes as layoffs grow within the tech sector. In recent months, several tech powerhouses have been cutting jobs including Amazon, Meta, Twitter, Microsoft and Google parent Alphabet.
