SpaceX successfully launched 60 communications satellites on Monday using a single rocket. The company says it's planning 24 more launches next year, adding to this already crowded space environment.

SpaceX sent the first batch of Starlink satellites into space earlier this year as a test. Some of the devices failed to operate, but SpaceX has since refined the software. CEO Elon Musk was able to send a tweet via the Starlink network recently, but the system needs at least a few hundred satellites for what SpaceX calls "moderate" coverage. The latest launch of 60 satellites gets SpaceX on the way there.

The constellation now includes more than 100 spacecraft launched over just two missions, a feat that puts SpaceX in the No. 2 spot on the list of world's largest operators as measured by the number of spacecraft. The company has already surpassed the Air Force, NASA and Iridium, to name a few.

SpaceX founder and chief executive Elon Musk wants to put thousands of these Starlink satellites in orbit, to offer high-speed internet service everywhere. He plans to start service next year in the northern U.S. and Canada after all the planned satellites have been launched.
