Sony Considers Internet Rival to Cable TV

Sony is reportedly being in talks with media companies in the US about the possibility of offering an Internet -based rival to cable TV, with programming sent over the Internet to Sony-made devices.

The company has reached out to several big media and entertainment companies, including Comcast-controlled NBCUniversal, Journal parent News Corp. and Discovery Communications, for rights negotiations that would allow it to carry their TV networks over the Internet to Sony devices in the U.S., it said. Such devices include PlayStation gaming consoles, Internet-enabled Sony TV sets and Blu-ray players.

"As such with these kinds of speculations, we won't be commenting on rumors," a spokesman for Sony Network Entertainment said in an email.
