Tech giant Samsung has reportedly launched a new research center, focusing on 6G research. The company has expanded its telecommunication research team and formed a new group called the Advanced Communications Research Center in the Korean capital of Seoul. Apart from the 6G research, Samsung Research is also in charge of artificial intelligence and robotics.

On its Samsung Research website, Samsung doesn't say much about 6G. "Already in Europe, China, and the United States, there are open discussions on the need for research on 6G, the next generation after 5G, and the first research projects are already underway across the globe," the website states.

Samsung is not alone in this race. In January, LG Electronics and KAIST announced a joint 6G Research Centre in Daejeon. LG has said it wants to use the research centre to pre-emptively secure technology for 6G. Despite that, it will take a lot of years for the next-generation mobile network to go live. In fact it will probably be a good few years until 5G goes mainstream.

5G isn't available in many markets right now, with only the likes of Europe, South Korea, and the U.S. offering 5G connectivity at the moment.
