Competition thus far has done little to reduce residential broadband prices in the U.S., nor has there been appreciable growth in average broadband speeds, according to two separate reports released in the last week. The price for standalone broadband in the U.S. is in the middle range of prices in OECD countries, according to: "Residential and Business Broadband Prices, Part 2: International Comparisons", released today by the Technology Policy Institute . (The OECD is an organization dedicated to global growth. The 34 participating countries are all among the developed nations.) Meanwhile, by another analysis, the U.S. ranks 25th in average connection speeds. The median download speed for the nation was 3 Mbps, and the average upload speed was 595 kbps, according to an analysis by Speed Matters, an organization affiliated with a number of unions and other progressive groups. The 2010 result was only on half of a megabit per second increase (from 2.5 Mbps to 3 Mbps) since last year. "At this rate, it will take the United States 60 years to catch up with current Internet speeds in South Korea," Speed Matters said. Read more -here-
