Oregon Tries to Criminalize Tweets

The Oregon State Legislature heard a controversial and misconceived piece of legislation that became known as "The Flash-mob Bill" on Monday, one that would create the brand new crime of "aggravated solicitation" for sending out inappropriate tweets. Yet 11 Republicans and one Democrat signed onto Senate Bill 1534.

Sen. Doug Whitsett, R-Klamath Falls, said he asked for the bill because he heard from retailers about being victims of flash mobs that steal stuff. It wasn't meant to stifle free speech, he said, but to bring law enforcement up to date with the modern era of social media and instant communication.

The Bill comes at a time of heightened concerns over internet safety in the wake of a growing conflict between pro-internet activists and government forces over copyright laws. However, after extreme opposition the law is dead.
