Security researchers have found new trojan malware that hit 100,000 devices using the Google Android operating system (OS) in China. The purpose of the malware is to log on to the China Mobile Android Market and download paid-for apps and video. China Mobile is one of the world's largest mobile providers with 677 million customers. It operates an app store (Mobile Market) for its customers where prices are automatically added to the users' phone bills.

Mobile security firm TrustGo explained that the MMarketPay.A Trojan could be hidden in a number of legitimate- looking applications, including those from Sina and media streaming company Funinhand, as well as travel and weather apps. Once downloaded, the Trojan automatically places orders for paid content and apps at China Mobile's official Mobile Market online store without informing the user.

"Named the Trojan!MMarketPay.A@Android, the virus automatically places orders and downloads paid apps and video content which can result in unexpectedly high phone bills," Trustgo security labs warned in a statement.

"Since the discovery of Trojan!MMarketPay.A@Android on 4 July, the virus has been found in nine additional China android markets and has infected more than 100,000 devices."

TrustGo concludes that "this sophisticated new malware could cause unexpected high phone bills." However, given the large number of apps that are installed and their relatively low cost, it is possible that many users will notice neither the app nor the addition to the phone bill – and will remain unaware that they have been infected.
