Netflix has officially confirmed that its app will no longer be available in the Play Store to users of rooted and unlocked Android devices.

The video streaming service's app still works on modified handsets/tablets that already have it installed, but this could eventually change. The latest app update will block devices that are not "Google-certified or have been altered" from accessing the mobile service.

According to the company, it's all about a shift in copy protection.

"With our latest 5.0 release, we now fully rely on the Widevine DRM provided by Google; therefore, many devices that are not Google-certified or have been altered will no longer work with our latest app and those users will no longer see the Netflix app in the Play Store," a Netflix representative said.
