Firefox 4 has passed 100 million downloads over the weekend according to the Mozilla downlad-stats website. Firefox has reached the 9-digit landmark in just under a month since its release on March 22.

Most of the downloads were made from European users - about 38.6 million. North American users downloaded Firefox 4 30 million times, 24.4 million of which came from the US. What's not perfectly clear is how many of these downloads were prompted updates from existing Firefox users, and how many were brand new installs.

According to a report of analytics firm Net Applications, Firefox's market share stands at 21.8 percent, trailing Microsoft's Internet Explorer franchise at 55.92 percent and followed by Google Chrome at 11.57 percent and Apple's Safari at 6.61 percent.
