Internet Explorer will update automatically

From January, Internet Explorer (IE) users will be automatically updated to the latest version of the browser. Microsoft said it was starting the project to update millions of machines to improve security online.

"Everyone benefits from an up-to-date browser," said Ryan Gavin, general manager of Internet Explorer business and marketing. "We are sharing our plan to automatically upgrade Windows customers to the latest version of Internet Explorer available for their PC. This is an important step in helping to move the Web forward."

"As we've talked to our customers about our approach [to upgrading,] everyone benefits from an up-to-date browser. But from a security perspective alone this is important. 90 percent of infections that were attributable to a security vendor had a patch out for more than a year," he added.

Although I agree that security is key, in any operating system.. automatically updating any software without the choice of the user, is not a good practice.

you can turn off auto updates and there is a patch if you wish to not allow it to update... simple enough but at this point security should trump personal preference.
