Facebook Inc's photo-sharing application Instagram has suffered temporary global outages in parts of the USA, Europe and Asia. Both the website and the mobile app have been affected. The website displayed the error message "5xx Server Error" and the app failed to load photos or profiles of users.

In a statement, an Instagram spokesperson said: "We're aware that some users are having trouble accessing Instagram. We're working to resolve the issue as quickly as possible."

The global outage comes after Instagram announced on Monday that long-term insider Adam Mosseri will take over as the new head of the photo-sharing app, a week after its co-founders resigned.

The third-largest social network on the planet, Instagram has close to one billion users. It evolved from a location check-in app called Burbn in 2010 and was sold to Facebook for $1 billion in 2012.

Now, the mobile app and the website are back up with users posting pictures and videos.
