High Speed Broadband Doesn't Matter A Darn

Despite the widely deployed high-speed broadband networks in U.S. and U.K. and the higher speeds that they offer, it turns out that only a small group of people takes advantage of these speeds. A recent report has shown that only 6.6% ot all network connections in U.K. use broadband at top speeds.

"But speed in itself is not enough to encourage usage. Ofcom (an independent regulatory authority for U.K. communications industries) has noted that in 2011 superfast coverage of the U.K. was at 60 percent, but only 6.6 percent of all connections were taking advantage of the top speeds. This suggests that focusing on availability is no guarantee of deriving full benefit from the investment."

This fact raises the question whether it is necessary to invest so much in high-speed broadband networks as only a few people will use them. Especially after we already have 4G, or LTE, and these are faster than most current broadband. Even 5G is most certainly already being discussed and a reasonable guess is it will arrive around 2020.

the main problem with all these reports, is they are usually a VERY small subset... there are more than 62 M people in UK, but there seems to be only a few hundred that that can actually find places like this website....
There are high usage people that develop cloud based autocad models, and a few that use high bandwidth skype and reporting, but ISPs do not want to give out info due to various privacy and competition concerns!!

many people just blame YouTube, but YouTube actually limits their OWN bandwidth, to stop being a hog, to other users..

I always tell people find a large file to download, eg 'linux distro' and use a good 'download monitor'
( a good one is 'netmeter' from metal machine)
to check speed over a LONG length of time..

speed tester sites only test for a few SECONDS over a special connection..

using netmeter at many times of the day will show you what is really happening...
