The German subsidiary of British mobile operator Vodafone has been attacked by a hacker, who has reportedly stolen a huge amount of customer data. According to the world's second-biggest mobile-phone carrier, a person with insider knowledge stole names, addresses, birth dates, and bank account information.

"Vodafone discovered and stopped the attack, and quickly filed charges," Vodafone said. "The attack was only possible due to…insider knowledge, and occurred deep in the company's IT infrastructure," it said.

The attack was detected by Vodafone at the beginning of September, stopped and reported to the police, Kuzey Esener, a Vodafone spokesman, said. Clients can check on Vodafone's German website to see if they are affected, and will also be informed by mail, he said.

"Vodafone deeply regrets the incident and apologises to all those affected," the operator added. "It's hardly possible to use the data to get direct access to the bank accounts of those affected".

Nevertheless, Vodafone Germany warned its customers that criminals might have got hold of the sensitive data and would try to get additional information about passwords and credit cards through so-called "phishing attacks" and fake e-mails.
