Google will alert users to DNSChanger malware infection

Yesterday Google announced it would start a campaign to notify users whose PCs were infected by the DNSChanger malware. The malware sends infected computers to DNS servers that redirect millions of victims to websites they have never intended to visit. With the move, Google wants to let those people know that their Internet connections will stop working on July 9, when temporary servers set up by the FBI to help DNSChanger victims are due to be disconnected.

"The warning will be at the top of the search results page for regular searches and image searches and news searches," Google security engineer Damian Menscher said. "The text will say, 'Your computer appears to be infected,' and it will give additional detail warning them that they may not be able to connect to the Internet in the future."

"Our goal with this notification is to raise awareness of DNSChanger among affected users," said Damian Menscher, a Google security engineer, in a post to a company blog. "We believe directly messaging affected users on a trusted site and in their preferred language will produce the best possible results."

Google says it will alert victims, starting yesterday, by using a method it executed last summer to remedy a separate attack, which "[sent] traffic to Google through a small number of intermediary servers." Google then sent a warning to users whose traffic came through those proxies.
