Google Warns of New State-Sponsored Cyberattack Targets

On Tuesday, tens of thousands more Google users will begin to see an alert message that warns they might have an infected computer and telling them to sort it out before it becomes part of a state-sponsored attack botnet.

This is not the first time that Google has issued such warnings, and users can expect once again to see them appearing on their Google homepage or in the Chrome browser.

The company said that since it started alerting users to malicious — probably state-sponsored — activity on their computers in June, it has picked up thousands more instances of cyberattacks than it anticipated.

Mike Wiacek, a manager on Google's information security team, told the NYT that the Middle East is most likely to be the source of the attacks, but drew a line at naming any one county. Instead he said that "a slew of different countries" are behind it.
