Google Messages may work with Garmin for satellite connectivity

Google appears to be working on a satellite SOS feature for Google Messages that would let users text emergency services from remote areas without a conventional cell signal. As spotted by developer Neil Rahmouni, early code in the Google Messages app shows work on an integration with Garmin and its emergency Garmin Response service. Google also appears to have started work on a UI for messaging emergency responders.

In contrast to Apple's Emergency SOS via satellite which is available in a handful of countries as of today, Garmin's satellite SOS service is available in more than 150 countries, covering all seven continents.

While these findings are indeed fascinating, Rahmouni advises against overhyping and points out that until a Google-Garmin collaboration is made official, nothing is certain. Android 14 is just around the corner and we'll see what this version will actually bring in terms of alternative connectivity options and satellite messaging features.

Handsets such as the Google Pixel 8 and the Samsung Galaxy S24 should arrive on the market with both the necessary hardware and the necessary software for satellite communications – which may well be delivered courtesy of Garmin.
