Google may invest in SpaceX project to beam Internet from satellites

According to recent reports from "The Information", Google may invest about US$1 billion in Elon Musk's SpaceX company which plans to use satellites to deliver low-cost Internet to areas of the earth that lack it. Google will probably help SpaceX with the development of satellites. It is expected that at least five years will be necessary to get the service up and running.

"Our focus is on creating a global communications system that would be larger than anything that has been talked about to date," Musk said last week.

SpaceX currently manufactures and launches rockets and spacecrafts. It has signed a contract with NASA to fly cargo resupply missions, and eventually manned missions, to the International Space Station.

This is not the first time that Google tries to spread Internet access across the world. It had already launched its own project - Project Loon which uses weather balloons to provide a floating hotspot in rural regions that don't have strong wireline infrastructure.
