Google has launched a social networking platform, designed to compete with Facebook. The service is called Google+ and similarly to Facebook allows users to share photos, messages, comments and other content with selected groups of friends.

"The connections between people increasingly happen online. Yet the subtlety and substance of real-world interactions are lost in the rigidness of our online tools," claimed senior Google VP Vic Gundotra. "So we'd like to bring the nuance and richness of real-life sharing to software. We want to make Google better by including you, your relationships, and your interests. And so begins the Google+ project."

The new service will initially be available to only a limited set of users. Starting today, Google+ is available by invitation only - on Android Market and the mobile web.

"This is a project that will span many years," said Bradley Horowitz, vice president, product management. "This is not something where we're done. On the contrary - we're just getting started, laying some of the foundation and then many features will evolve."
