Google is almost sure to pull out of China

The Financial Times claims that Google is 99.9 per cent certain that it must shut down its Chinese search engine.

The company's talks with China over censorship apparently have broken down with neither side having given any ground.

Quoting a source inside Google, the FT reports that Google has drawn up detailed plans to walk out of China. The FT thinks it likely that an announcement could come any day now that talks between Google and the Chinese government have reached an impasse and that Google will therefore abandon its Chinese language search operation in the Middle Kingdom.

China's Minister of Industry and Information Technology, Li Yizhong, told reporters on Friday that if Google did not respect Chinese laws then China would view it as "unfriendly and irresponsible", and the company would then have to face the consequences.
