Google on Tuesday said it will begin to regularly publish Internet security data on malware and phishing scams, in an effort to draw awareness to just how unsafe the Internet has become.

"Two of the biggest threats online are malicious software (known as malware) that can take control of your computer, and phishing scams that try to trick you into sharing passwords or other private information," wrote Google's software engineer Lucas Ballard in an official blog post announcing the new data.

The weekly reports will include the number of malware and phishing sites Google detects as its search-engine crawlers scan the Web. The company said it typically finds about 10,000 such sites a day.

To show the global scale of the problem, Google said it will provide maps of where the viruses are created. The data will be a part of Google's Transparency Report, in which the company also discloses government and law enforcement requests for user data.

What's interesting about Google's latest Transparency Report is that web sites people think are safe but have been compromised to distribute malicious software are far more predominating than sites that are intentionally dangerous.
